Market Analysis for Fuel Efficient Cook Stoves in the Acholi Sub-region, Uganda

August 23, 2012

This report summarizes the results from the household energy and market assessment focused on cooking energy in the Acholi sub-region of Northern Uganda. The assessment was carried out in May/June 2012 to inform the design of a market-orientated intervention aimed at strengthening the local market for clean, affordable, and effective energy technologies.

Among other things, the assessment concludes that despite reservations from suppliers, significant suppressed demand for fuel efficient stoves is present Acholi sub-region, due largely to the cost savings provided by reduced fuel usage. Mercy Corps believes that by helping to address the high distribution costs, a lack of embedded financing in the value chain, and a chronic lack of consumer awareness, this demand can be unlocked leading to the creation of robust local markets for clean energy products.
