With funding assistance from ECHO (European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office), Mercy Corps is helping communities in the Ferghana Valley – a densely populated region situated in three countries- prepare for and respond to potential natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and mudslides.

Mercy Corps is helping to improve local level response mechanisms to natural disasters and to promote regional cooperation between government officials in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Mercy Corps is implementing a Child-to-Child model to work with children as peers in schools and households to learn the basics of disaster preparedness, developing planning linkages between local government officials, and scaling up to create a functional regional network.

Plans are also being made to conduct a mass media campaign to increase public awareness of disaster prevention.
