All of us in the Mercy Corps family are struggling to comprehend today's unimaginable tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. As a father, I am at a loss for words. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those families affected.

We at Mercy Corps are no stranger to tragedy. Every day, we work to relieve human suffering that results from natural disaster and senseless violence. Yet we never become inured to its horrible human cost.

Comforting children in the aftermath of tragedy is a critical part of our emergency response. To families looking for guidance as they struggle with today's events, we offer these recommendations from our partner Carol Dell'Oliver, PhD, a clinical psychologist who has developed many of our Comfort for Kids materials.

There are other resources out there, too, like the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and The Dougy Center.

We offer these thoughts and resources in the hope they can bring some comfort to a mourning community.
