One year after China earthquake, Mercy Corps helps foster long-term healing
Portland, OR – On the one-year anniversary of the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked the Sichuan Province of China, the global relief and development agency Mercy Corps reports that it is working with its Chinese partners to help thousands of children recover from long-term psychological trauma. The earthquake left 70,000 people dead – more than 5,000 of them children, according to Chinese Government figures released last week – and five million homeless.

Members of Mercy Corps’ 11-person emergency response team expects to deliver the supplies tomorrow in Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province, where intensifying fighting between the Army and Taliban militants has triggered widespread displacement.
Mercy Corps sends emergency assessment team to Pakistan’s northwest frontier province

The fighting has forced an estimated 500,000 people to flee their homes in what the United Nations is calling a “massive displacement.” This flood of people into camps has created an urgent need for basic supplies such as food, water and shelter.
Julie Mancini joins Mercy Corps as action center dDirector
Portland, OR – Mercy Corps is pleased to announce that long-time Portlander Julie Mancini has joined the organization to serve as director of the Mercy Corps Action Center – a new educational public space where visitors can learn about global issues and take meaningful action. The Action Center opens in fall 2009 and is located on the ground floor of Mercy Corps’ new global headquarters building in Old Town Chinatown. Mercy Corps CEO Neal Keny-Guyer says Mancini’s experience with youth programs made her a perfect fit for the job.
