Mercy Corps responds to earthquake disasters in Samoa and Sumatra
Portland, OR – Mercy Corps is responding to two earthquake-related disasters in the Asia Pacific region: in tsunami-wracked Samoan Islands and on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, where an emergency team is on its way to the epicenter of a 7.6-magnitude quake. Samoa was slammed Tuesday night by a tsunami generated by an 8.0-magnitude quake. Mercy Corps is helping through a local partner on the ground. News agencies report that the death toll may reach 100.
Mercy Corps partners with new gaming website GamesThatGive
Portland, OR – The global relief and development agency Mercy Corps today announced that it will be one of the initial charity partners of GamesThatGive, a new charitable giving website. GamesThatGive allows users to play some of their favorite casual video games online, including Solitaire, Soduku and Gems, for free, while raising money to support charitable causes in the process. Mercy Corps launches book club contest
Portland, OR – The global relief and development agency Mercy Corps today announced a nationwide book club contest to help improve opportunities for women and girls in the developing world. Mercy Corps is encouraging book clubs to read Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. More than 350 book clubs have already signed up to participate.

As 'hungry season' approaches, Mercy Corps launches campaign on women and hunger
Portland, OR – The global relief and development agency Mercy Corps today launched the “One Table” campaign to empower women to fight global hunger. Mercy Corps pledged to raise $3 million for these efforts, as well as influence U.S. global hunger policy and spread awareness about how women can lead families out of hunger and poverty. “One Table” was launched at the approach of the summer hungry season, when food stocks dwindle to dangerously low levels in many poor countries.
Humanitarian coalition welcomes legislation introduced by Representatives McGovern and Emerson
Washington, DC – Last week, Representatives Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.) introduced the Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2817). Based on the Roadmap to End Global Hunger report released by a diverse coalition of NGOs in February, the legislation outlines the broad elements of a comprehensive plan to address global hunger in the short, intermediate and long term and sets forth recommendations to improve U.S. government coordination of hunger-alleviation efforts.
Sudan: Joint statement on registration of Mercy Corps Scotland in Northern Sudan
Mercy Corps and Mercy Corps Scotland wish to clarify statements made by John Holmes, the U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, on Thursday 11 June 2009 relating to the return of expelled humanitarian relief agencies to Sudan. Contrary to Mr Holmes’ comments, Mercy Corps, which was expelled from Northern Sudan in early March 2009, is not resuming operations in Northern Sudan. Mercy Corps Scotland, a UK based charity, has registered to work in Sudan. Mercy Corps Scotland is very pleased that the Government of Sudan has approved and welcomed this registration.
