In Afghanistan, 70 percent of people do not have access to the electric grid. Most people and businesses rely on dirty and noisy diesel generators — and the costs are astronomical. After years of conflict, people in Afghanistan are working hard to recover and rebuild the economy.
Mercy Corps supporters and our incredible team members make this innovative work possible. Send a note of encouragement to our team members in Afghanistan ▸
To help families and businesses access electricity — and to help foster long-term economic growth — Mercy Corps is bringing solar power to Afghanistan through a sustainable and thoughtful business model. Here’s how it works:
- Mercy Corps pays for the upfront cost of the solar panel system
- The business pays for the system in affordable instalments over time, in a lease-to-own arrangement
- After a few years, the business owns the solar panels outright and has reliable, low-cost electricity.
- As more small businesses and homes participate in this program, Mercy Corps can reinvest the money from payments and expand the program to include more households and businesses.
