Ten best photos of 2011
I uploaded over 15,000 images to our photo library this year and discarded thousands more. These are the 10 that stuck in my mind, all of them memorable in their own way. Mercy Corps responded to several emergencies in 2011, the first being the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March.
Haiti: Art therapy camp for Port-au-Prince youth
This past August, we took 20 school-age children to a mountainside retreat outside Port-au-Prince for six days of activities designed to heal emotional wounds from the 2010 earthquake.
Ethiopia: A sense of pride
We were recently asked to create a large-scale permanent photography collection for the gallery attached to our Portland Action Center. This image by Thatcher Cook was one of the selections.

This intriguing image is part of the work that Cassandra Nelson brought back from her recent MC assessment trip to Libya and Egypt. It was taken in Cairo while visiting a Coptic Christian community in El Makattam Hill.
