On Wednesday, December 10, 2014, Mercy Corps was invited to testify before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs for the hearing: “The Ebola Epidemic: The Keys to Success for the International Response.” Javier Alvarez, Senior Team Lead of our Strategic Response and Global Emergencies Unit and Acting Country Director for Liberia spoke on behalf of the agency.

Mercy Corps urged Members of Congress and the world to look at the Ebola crisis as more than a health crisis, but a crisis of systems. We called for greater attention to the socio-economic implications of the crisis on traders, vendors, youth and vulnerable households.

Mercy Corps provided witness alongside a highly esteemed panel, including: President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia; Mr. Dr. Paul Farmer, Co-Founder of Partners in Health; Dr. Anne Peterson, Vice-Dean of Public Health Program at Ponce Health Sciences University and former Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Global Health, USAID, and Pape Gaye, President And CEO of IntraHealth International.
