Global organization honored for its work with refugeesPORTLAND, ORE. – The global organization Mercy Corps is honored to receive the 2017 Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice from the Harmony Foundation. The organization bestows the award annually to honor groups or individuals for their humanitarian efforts. Now in its 13th year, previous recipients of the prestigious award include Nobel laureates Malala Yousafzai and His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama; current Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo; and the aid group Doctors Without Borders.
In recognizing Mercy Corps, Harmony Foundation President Abraham Mathai cited the global organization for its work around the world on behalf of those in need.
“We salute your strong leadership and your organization’s committed, compassionate and courageous intervention to intercept injustice with justice,” said Dr. Abraham Mathai, President, Harmony Foundation. “Especially noteworthy is the work you are doing in the Middle East in view of the humanitarian crisis there.”
The theme for this year’s Mother Teresa Memorial Award is Compassion Beyond Borders – A Compassionate Response to the Refugee Crisis.
“Mercy Corps is greatly honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Neal Keny-Guyer, chief executive officer, Mercy Corps. “I accept this recognition on behalf of the thousands of men and women who work for Mercy Corps across 40 countries, powered by the belief that a better world is possible.”
The Harmony Foundation presented the award to Mercy Corps Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships and Executive Director of Mercy Corps Europe Simon O’Connell at the annual Harmony International Conference on Sunday, December 10, 2017, in Mumbai, India.
