OK, here's my harebrained idea:
Instead of a Christmas gift from the mall, I've asked for this matching fundraising drive. The more we can get everyone to donate, the bigger my Christmas gift donation will be. Our family will match your donations up to $750 -and I think that with all of us, matching that amount should be a cinch.
Mercy Corps is my favorite charity. Browse this site and you'll see that they do lots of wonderful work all around the globe, from here in the US to the most destitute corners of the planet. And far from air-dropping crates of food, Mercy Corps works because they focus on improving long-term stability and prosperity anywhere they help out, so they leave sustainable good wherever they go. More than 95% of their workforce are locally employed people -just one of their strategies for improving communities from the ground up. From the Killing Fields of Cambodia, where the charity started 30 years ago; to providing critical relief in the Sudan, Afghanistan, and the Congo; to rebuilding New Orleans, they are a model of compassion, global responsibility, and humanism.
So let's see how much we can drum up for them before Christmas Eve. You can donate right through this page and it will generate a receipt for you to give to the tax man.
If anyone wants to join me, either by adding your own pledge for others to match to mine, or by starting your own page, the more the merrier!
So make like Gandhi and "be the change you wish to see in the world".
Thanks and Happy Holidays!
