Novelist and journalist Maaza Mengiste weaves a personal account of her experience as an Ethiopian refugee with observations about current events in the region. Mengiste's debut novel, "Beneath the Lion's Gaze," a historical fiction account of the 1974 Ethiopian youth revolution, appeared on several "Best of 2010" lists, including Publishers Weekly and The Christian Science Monitor. Author of several articles on Ethiopia's revolution as it relates to upheaval in Libya and Egypt, Mengiste is at work on a new novel called "The Shadow King" about Mussolini's invasion and occupation of Ethiopia.
