Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is expected to become East Asia's largest metropolitan region by 2015. Despite the challenges of burgeoning urbanism, the metropolis has benefited from ongoing interaction between the central government, local planning and development authorities regarding environmental challenges for the urban poor.

This International Development Research Centre (IDRC) funded project, implemented by Mercy Corps, seeks to generate environmentally-safe economic benefits and opportunities for marginalized people by working closely with local governments and communities on water supply, sanitation and solid waste issues, through the creation of a "City Team."
