Scrambling to help Haiti

Country: Haiti
Topics: Emergencies

I've been on the phone for most of the last three hours figuring out the best way we can respond to the news in Haiti.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has toppled buildings, including at least one hospital, and we assume there are significant casualties (the news has been slow to trickle out).

We do not currently have staff in Haiti, but we do have extensive experience responding to earthquakes — most recently in Padang, Indonesia last September. My colleagues and I have been canvassing our own emergency operations team as well as veteran relief workers from throughout the agency to determine the most qualified and immediately deployable staff.

We will begin deploying our team tomorrow and working now to line up resources to respond.

You can help our response with a gift to the Haiti Earthquake Fund. Thank you.

I would like to help in any way, a personal call to arms.

In 1984/1986 I worked with Peace Corps Haiti as a hospital statistician conducting field surveys’ targeting children under one year old. This was directly beside the Hospital Founder, Doctor Reginald Bolous’ in CITY SIMON now called CITY SOILE’ just outside of Port au Price.

I speak fluent Haitian Patios, with intermediate French. I was the key point of contact person in the hospitals development, incredibly diverse job responsibilities.

Again post Hurricane Katrina 2005 I worked in the office of logistics with FEMA as a statistician. Two months canvassing Arkansas for displaced victims, and then entering the information into the FEMA data base. Worked in conjunction with states and federal agencies providing housing, medical assistance and other services.

That’s my elevator pitch to fill the immediate needs of the people of Haiti – I am qualified to help in many ways, put me to work. I’ll be ready to leave tomorrow! I have much to contribute immediately.

Please forward to any agency you feel appropriate.

Thank You:
Scott Swansen

Hi everyone, thanks again for the incredible outpouring of support and offers to deploy and help out with the emergency relief effort. We appreciate your willingness to lend a hand!

Unfortunately Mercy Corps does not send volunteers to our programs overseas, even in emergencies. Our staff is made up of paid professionals, and we hire people locally.

We also don't accept donations of disaster-relief items from the general public.

There are many good reasons for these policies, most of which can be found on the FAQ page of the Center for International Disaster Information, under the "Volunteering" and "Donations - In-kind" sections. It also explains at the top why cash donations are the most helpful way to help — how they allow relief supplies to be purchased locally, giving a "triple advantage ... of stimulating local economies, ensuring that supplies arrive as quickly as possible and reducing transport and storage costs."

If you'd like to do more than simply make a donation, consider spreading the word via Facebook, Twitter or your email list, holding a fundraiser in your community, or post one of our banners on your website.

Thank you!

For those who want to help. Keep an eye for the recruitment pages of agencies who are setting up operations there.

For first response it will involve already set up emergency teams and people within emergency rosters vetted by these organisations.

But you could get involved in recovery projects afterwards. Keep an eye for the employment pages of Mercy Corps.

It takes resources to bring someone and support that person in the field. If you can't be of immediate help, if you get in the way or take the space of a person more needed, you are doing more harm than good.

Best thing you can do is to give funds. They'll serve in the field. Right now they need less people than money. It's haitian national staff members who will do the bulk of the work. Think about it. They can hire 5 staff members for the price of sending you.
