The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami damaged more than 75,000 acres of rice paddies across Indonesia. Restoring these fields was an important part of Mercy Corps' post-disaster efforts to get people back to work.
In After the Tsunami: A First Rice Harvest, four Mercy Corps Indonesia staff members detail efforts to reclaim rice plots in six communities. They say heavy rainfall mitigated many effects of increased soil salinity, and recommend responding quickly to future crop disasters by focusing on recovery and replacement.
