Though much of Indonesia's population has long struggled with chronic poverty, Indonesia's urban poverty rate dramatically increased by 60% after the Southeast Asia currency collapse in 1997.
In response to this economic crisis, Mercy Corps began implementing food-for-work programs in Jakarta with funding from USAID. Built to Last examines the sustainability of infrastructure built in Jakarta through food-for-work projects from 1999 to 2004.
From latrines with water sources to community centers serving as health posts, these structures helped maintain the health of Jakarta's population while providing funds for needy families.
The study provides a closer look at the factors that contribute to the creation, long-term use, and maintenance of such communal structures.
