The Ferghana Valley of Central Asia has long been identified as a region of potential economic, political, and social unrest due to its high population density, ethnically diverse population, and scarce natural resources.
The large youth population in this region is vulnerable to exploitation and is potential actor in future conflicts. This study critically examines the steps that two of Mercy Corps' programs have taken to prevent future conflict while outlining criteria for assessing gains in community development and understanding.
This study outlines ways in which the two Ferghana Valley programs have contributed to the community's ability to identify and mitigate sources of conflict, and proposes indicators for understanding the extent to which programs have reduced the potential for conflict.
