New York, NY - One in seven people around the world go to bed hungry every night, making hunger and poverty the number one global health epidemic, according to the International Food Policy Research Institute. This Thanksgiving season, the first-of-its-kind Action Center to End World Hunger in New York City encourages people of all ages to "Act Now, Eat Later" and offers its top action steps that children and adults can take to help fight the hunger epidemic, whether they have one minute, one hour, one day, one week, one month, one year or a lifetime.
To learn more ways, stop by the Action Center, in Battery Park City in lower Manhattan, or visit actioncenter.org.
In one minute, you can set certain internet search engines as your homepage, allowing you to help fight hunger and poverty with daily searches or a simple click. Advertisers pay a small amount to some websites each time a visitor clicks on their advertisement. Ripple.org, for example, passes 100% of this amount directly into its hunger charities.
In one hour, you can "Shop for Change." Purchasing items made by others in developing nations improves their financial status and is an integral part of eradicating poverty and hunger. To learn more about Shop for Change and to shop now, you can visit the Action Center or visit ActionCenter.org/shopforchange
In one day, you can create or paint ceramic bowls and invite your family and friends to a fundraising meal served in these bowls. Ask your guests to make a suggested minimum donation to a hunger-fighting organization of your choice. The bowls could serve as a party favor.
In one week, you can clean out your pantry and donate the extra food to those who need it most. If Americans recovered just 5% of food wasted each year, 14 million people could be fed. Organizations such as Feeding America arrange food donation pick-ups.
In one month, you can organize your own Global Action Day to fight hunger. Learn how to plan and advertise an event either at your school or in your community using resources and ideas, and get others involved in the fight against hunger, at globalcitizencorps.org.
In one year, join and become active in the Global Citizen Corps, a national network of youth committed to ending global poverty and hunger.
In one lifetime, clean your plate. Every day, Americans waste on average a pound of food per person. Buy and cook only the amount of food you really need; store food wisely and safely to maximize freshness and longevity; think before you throw away edible food.
