A team from Portland-based Mercy Corps is heading to Haiti to help with relief efforts in the wake of Tuesday’s earthquake.
A two person team plans to depart Thursday. Caitlin Carlson with Mercy Corps says once they arrive they’ll assess the needs. She says the earthquake exacerbates an already dire humanitarian situation in Haiti.
Carlson: “That on top of a massive disaster can complicate things. It makes the needs even greater. So, our team is going to get down there as soon as possible, establish programs and ramp them up from there.”
Mercy Corps relief workers have experience with earthquakes. Teams helped survivors in Indonesia last year and in 2008 in China and Pakistan. Carlson says the most immediate needs will be food, clean water, sanitation services and shelter.
