PORTLAND (AP) — The international aid agency Mercy Corps has a new headquarters building in Portland.
The relief organization will formally open its new $37 million building in the city’s Old Town district on Friday. The operation’s 140 Portland employees moved into the building last month. The building, a mix of a restored 1890s structure and new construction, replaces six rented buildings.
City government subsidized the project to keep Mercy Corps in Portland, and the nonprofit has raised nearly $10 million for the building, leaving it with a $7 million mortgage.
Mercy Corps has a worldwide staff of 3,700, and this year has provided relief and development assistance to 17 million people globally.
