ASHLAND, Ore. -- An Ashland man is on his way to Haiti to join the earthquake response effort.

Richard Jacquot, a team leader with the the Portland-based international aid agency Mercy Corps, departed Medford Thursday.

Jacquot says his team will first assess the damage in Haiti, find out what other organizations are doing and then pick an area where they can help the most.

"Basically helping people get back on their feet, resuming their business, repairing their house, cleaning the street. And we are putting in road and putting back in electricity, water, so that's what we do. That's where Mercy Corps is the strongest," Jacquot said.

Jacquot has been working in disaster relief for over 20 years.
