Farmer Selina Marie (right) carries tree saplings to plant throughout her farm, high in the mountainous community of Sibase.

Through Mercy Corps' Vie, Te & Eneji (Life, Land & Energy) project, Selina and other farmers throughout the region are learning how to protect their soil from washing away and are enriching the land with new crops.

Haiti's devastating deforestation has left rural communities like this vulnerable to natural disasters and failed crops. These new trees — along with rock barriers on the steep slopes — will not only keep the soil in place, but will yield new fruits for farmers to sell in local markets, improving incomes in the long-term.
