[ WOMEN'S SMALL BUSINESS KIT ]

$40

For many women in troubled regions, economic opportunities are limited, and traditional salaries make it difficult for them to provide for their children. Small business opportunities can help them achieve economic independence and stability, and give them a sense of accomplishment.

With a little assistance from Mercy Corps, these women are investing their creative ideas and hard work to start and run small businesses — ventures that enable their families to move from poverty to opportunity. Your purchase of a Women's Small Business Kit helps provide a loan to a woman so that she may start her own business. These loans are being used to support a variety of activities, including production of felt carpets, family-run flourmills, roadside cafes, village hair salons, and small sewing workshops.

When you buy a Mercy Kit, we will deliver a beautiful, full-color card to your recipient by regular mail or email — you choose. This card describes in detail how your gift is supporting Mercy Corps' work around the world. A Mercy Kit is a caring, convenient way to share your commitment with a friend or loved one.

"And we thank you, Mercy Corps. You're changing lives."

- OPRAH WINFREY, DECEMBER 2005

[ NEVENKA'S STORY]

Both Nevenka Mihalovic and her husband lost their jobs during Yugoslavia's violent collapse. Mihalovic continued her trade, making clothing at home with an old sewing machine, but she couldn't sell enough merchandise to make ends meet.

One day she caught a glimmer of good news on a local radio broadcast. A global humanitarian organization, Mercy Corps, was working to breathe new life into local economies.

Mercy Corps' Economic Opportunities project suited the seamstress to a T. The day after hearing about it, she picked up and completed an application. Soon, Mihalovic learned that her application had been chosen from thousands submitted.

A year after receiving her grant, business is going well for Nevenka Mihalovic. She has her own label, Anetex, which local families are beginning to recognize as a symbol of quality: she recently logged an order for one thousand pairs of boys' pants. And she's registered with her local government, so she can sell directly to area stores — and obtain much-needed benefits, like health care, for her family.

For Nevenka Mihalovic and her husband, Mercy Corps has been a perfect fit.
