Marcie Grabau raised $175 for Haiti Earthquake Recovery

Help me raise money for Mercy Corps' response to the Haiti Earthquake.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince Tuesday afternoon, January 12th, collapsing buildings, including at least one hospital. Tens of thousands are feared dead in the largest quake to strike the impoverished Caribbean nation in 200 years. Power is out, telecommunications are spotty and food and water are reportedly growing scarce.

The first wave is on the ground now, the search and rescue workers and first responders. We are beginning to organize the second wave which is to save and sustain life for the first few weeks. You can help. We are beginning to collect donations of specific items to send and need funds to help pay for the cost of shipping, fuel and a means to get it to the people who need it.

This all started for me last week when I called friends in my church, Bill and Dominque. Dominique was born and raised in Port au Prince and has family there. To be honest, I was thinking of offering to take them dinner that day. Bill was already working with World Vision (www.worldvision.org) and Mercy Corps to get a plane to Haiti, and he asked me to help him organize a relief effort. What started as a casserole has turned into planes, trucks, warehouses and cases of water, infant formula, food and basic medical supplies.

I also have a friend who is a Doctor and the Country Director for World Relief (www.worldrelief.org) living in Port au Prince. Dr. Hubert Morquette was our host when my daughters and I spent 2 weeks in Haiti in 2004 working with World Relief. We are relieved to learn that Dr. Morquette survived the disaster, but has been working tirelessly to save those around him.

Help me, help them.

Project summary

Project summary
Just hours after a catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti — killing thousands and displacing up to two million people — Mercy Corps began deploying an experienced, field-tested emergency response team. Upon arriving in Port-au-Prince, we went immediately to work, talking with displaced survivors about what they needed most. We delivered 15 tons of food to the city's biggest hospital. We got clean water flowing again in medical clinics and shattered neighborhoods. We ensured a reliable income for survivors by creating a cash-for-work program, which also began revitalizing failing local economies. Today, our team is working with survivors, local authorities and partner organizations on long-term plans — including job creation — that will help Haiti rebuild better and stronger.
