A Special Gathering on Women War & Peace:
Screening and Panel Discussion of ‘The War We Are Living’
Mercy Corps Action Center will be co-hosting a screening and panel discussion of The War We Are Living, one of the films from the Award winning documentary series Women, War and Peace, currently airing on OPB/PBS Tuesdays throughout October and November. The screening is a part of a nation-wide movement where local communities are gathering to view the films and discuss the rising role of women as global peacemakers. This event is made even more timely by the award of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize to three women peacemakers.
This screening will take place on Monday November 7th at 6pm, in the Mercy Corps Action Center. This panel will include: the executive producer of the film, Pam Hogan; Jensine Larson, founder of World Pulse; and Mercy Corps team members working on gender issues.
The War We Are Living reveals the struggles in Cauca, a mountainous region in Colombia’s Pacific southwest, where two extraordinary Afro-Colombian women are fighting to hold onto the gold-rich land that has sustained their community through small-scale mining for centuries. Clemencia Carabali and Francia Marquez are part of a powerful network of female leaders who found that in wartime women can organize more freely than men. As they defy paramilitary death threats and insist on staying on their land, Carabali and Marquez are standing up for a generation of Colombians who have been terrorized and forcibly displaced as a deliberate strategy of war. If they lose the battle, they and thousands of their neighbors will join Colombia’s 4 million people – most of them women and children – who have been uprooted from their homes and livelihoods.
