OVERVIEW

Despite democratic reforms since the end of its civil war in 1997, Tajikistan, the poorest of the former Soviet republics, remains economically isolated from the rest of the region and the world.

Mercy Corps is working with communities, governments and the private sector to prevent conflict and bolster the economy in multi-ethnic border regions, promote better nutrition and health and provide small loans to entrepreneurs, especially women.

Formal medical care is scarce in the Rasht Valley. Sokina learned to teach nutrition, health and hygiene to women in her tiny village of Mullobadal. "This is how I can change my community."
