The Angel Network, a charitable organization founded by Oprah Winfrey, has donated $1 million toward tsunami relief operations in Southern Asia. This generous gift will be used by Mercy Corps, in cooperation with two other humanitarian organizations, to respond to the immediate needs of tsunami survivors.

"The generosity of Oprah's Angel Network allows Mercy Corps to better serve the critical needs of people - especially children - in tsunami-affected areas of Sri Lanka," said Matthew De Galan, Mercy Corps' Chief Development Officer. "As Mercy Corps works to help Sri Lankans rebuild their communities and reclaim their economic livelihoods, the Angel Network's contribution is extremely helpful."

Mercy Corps is currently leading relief efforts in three tsunami-ravaged Asian countries: India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, the organization is providing lifesaving relief, psychosocial support for grieving families and a cash-for-work program designed to put people back to work, rebuilding their communities and revitalizing local economies.

Over the past 25 years, Mercy Corps has brought hope and help to millions of people in over 80 countries, including areas of Southern Asia.

Mercy Corps' commitment to eradicating poverty and strengthening communities is echoed by Oprah's Angel Network's mission to inspire people to make a difference for others. Since 1997, the Angel Network has raised over $27 million to support non-profit organizations and charitable projects around the world.

Mercy Corps thanks Oprah's Angel Network for its generous contribution to critical tsunami relief operations and ongoing commitment to needy families across the globe.
