Sofa's Story
Sofia - "Sofa" to her friends - is 13 years old. Like many young girls her age, she enjoys music, dancing and drawing, and is very artistic. Unlike many young girls her age, Sofa was recently homeless and begging on the streets of Tbilisi.
Sofa was headed for a life of poverty, despair and hopelessness. Then one day a street friend told her about Child and Environment Center, a Mercy Corps-funded enterprise that provides food, clothing, recreation, and - most importantly - a place to live for homeless children.
The Child and Environment Center seeks out street children to let them know there is an alternative to living hand to mouth on the streets. Children can live at the Center until they are 16, learning sewing, languages and how to support themselves. Child and Environment Center continues to follow the children once they leave, and helps them in any way they can.
Sofa has changed since the days when she had to beg on the streets in order to eat. When asked what she likes most about Child and Environment Center, she lights up and says, "Everything!"
Mercy Corps' Give for Kids program helps young women like Sofa. Join today.
