Young Kamran
June 15, 2004
Country: Azerbaijan
Young Kamran is a lucky seven years old. The youngest of six children, he has healthfully made it through the first critical years of his life. In Kamran's village, many children are not as fortunate.
Kamran lives with his family in the village of Yelagaj, situated high on a craggy mountain in poverty-racked southeastern Azerbaijan. This area has the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the entire country.
In response to the crisis in villages like Yelagaj, Mercy Corps is working to train health care providers and ensure basic health care at the local level. The Child Survival Project directly benefits 20,000 children under the age of five and more than 30,000 women of reproductive age - including those in Kamran's family.
Kamran is lucky to be a healthy seven-year-old boy in this region of Azerbaijan. With help from Mercy Corps, villages in southeastern Azerbaijan are building a healthier future for mothers and guaranteeing that many more children will be just as lucky.
Mercy Corps' Give For Kids program helps children like Kamran.
