Mercy Corps has teamed up with the Students Recycling Used Technology (STRUT) program to distribute 130 donated computers to schools and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Azerbaijan.

The computers will be used mainly for educational purposes. Mercy Corps is distributing the computers to schools in over 22 rayons and cities of Azerbaijan including Nakchivan Autonomous Republic. The schools have been selected based on their urgent need for computers and capacity to use them effectively.

"Donated computers are a great addition to our activities," said William Holbrook, Mercy Corps Chief of Party for Azerbaijan. "For students in many rural schools these computers will provide the first opportunity to see and learn about computers. We hope that these computers will add new skills and opportunities for them," he added.

The computers will be channeled to schools through the Mercy Corps-managed Azerbaijan Humanitarian Assistance Program (AHAP) implementing partners, which include ACDI/VOCA, Adventist Development and Relief Agency, Cooperative Housing Foundation, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Pathfinder International, Save the Children Foundation, and World Vision International.

In addition, these agencies will be in charge of the oversight and technical assistance of the computers.Ê The United Stated Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Azerbaijan Humanitarian Assistance Program (AHAP) is designed to provide health care, community development and economic opportunity programs and services for internally displaced persons and conflict-affected population within Azerbaijan. The AHAP area covers over 22 rayons and cities in Azerbaijan.ÊÊ

Mercy Corps has also provided 14 computers to local NGOs including Young Lawyers Association, Azerbaijan Diabetic League, Association of Disabled Women and the Society for Internally Displaced People.

This computer project has been made possible thanks to generous contributions made by BP, Statoil, Chevron,Texaco, UNOCAL, Baker & McKenzie and Ernst & Young which helped to offset the cost of shipping from the United States to Azerbaijan.
