A 5-person Mercy Corps team arrived early Saturday morning in Bam, Iran, site of a devastating 6.5-magnitude earthquake. The team carried out an initial assessment of the region, working with international partners and local officials to determine priority needs.

Two Mercy Corps trucks carrying 1,300 blankets, 1,000 space heaters and 990 liters of drinking water will arrive in the quake-affected area late Saturday night local time.

The relief supplies are part of Mercy Corps' emergency response to the powerful earthquake, which is believed to have killed more than 25,000 people and left tens of thousands more injured and homeless.

Initial reports from the earthquake zone are that there remains great need for shelter and cold weather supplies with many survivors staying outdoors, exposed to the winter weather. Mercy Corps is working with its partners to procure additional relief supplies, as well as basic foods and medicines.

Mercy Corps has worked in Iran since May 2003, operating a program that assists Afghan refugees living along the Iranian border with Afghanistan. The agency has roughly 30 staff members in Iran and was the first U.S. relief organization to be registered by the Iranian government to work in the country.

Mercy Corps is accepting donations to support its relief efforts in Iran. All money will be used strictly for humanitarian purposes. Examples of what your gift can achieve:

$25 can provide winter blankets for a family of five
$45 can provide space heaters for three families
$60 can provide drinking water for 30 people
